Salicylic acid is a powerful ingredient, a worthy opponent for stubborn skin concerns like acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. Obtained from white willow and wintergreen leaves, it has naturally occurring antimicrobial properties.
One of the most commonly used beta hydroxy acids (or BHA, as denoted) in exfoliants and skincare products, salicylic acid is oil-soluble, allowing it to go deep into pores to unclog them and clear excess oil and dead skin cell buildup, both common causes for acne. Its antimicrobial properties also protect the skin from external aggressors and sources of irritation, making it a must-have in your arsenal against acne and pimples.
Since it’s a strong ingredient, it’s recommended to start with smaller concentrations, or use the right concentration that corresponds with the degree of effect you want to see in your skin. Most over-the-counter products stay within the range of 0.5 - 2% salicylic acid, a safe limit to prevent any adverse reactions or dryness.
If you still think salicylic acid is too intensive for what you’re looking for, salicin might be a good alternative. Found naturally in willow bark extract (the same plant that provides salicylic acid), it provides the same effects except at a milder level.
For especially acne-prone and irritated skin, Botanic Hearth’s Neem, Cica and Salicylic Acid face wash provides a unique blend of ingredients that work together to fight acne and soothe the skin. Neem, a natural antimicrobial agent prevents the spread of acne, while salicylic acid exfoliates the skin by clearing the pores and managing oil levels. Cica acts as an anti-inflammatory to soothe and balance, leaving the skin clear, calm, and cleansed.
For body acne and clogged pores, our Calendula, Neem and Salicylic Acid body wash effectively cleanses and exfoliate, removing microbial sources of acne and soothing the skin as well.
